Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
