The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined direction.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the complete message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. Following a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all eager to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
The President
Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and hope your group can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as development advances.
